The Indian business etiquette of Hindu faith is influenced by karma – their belief in past lives and one’s conduct in them – and dharma, a sense of obligation and personal duty. The younger, middle class generation is torn between these traditional values and a growing consumerism, as Western standards infiltrate Indian society.
For many, however, the main concern is getting enough food and decent medical care; India has an enormous rich-poor divide, as well as massive overcrowding, a high rate of illiteracy and an unhealthy dependence on subsistence agriculture for over 53% of the population. Despite pressing problems there is rapid economic development due partly to a strong domestic demand which is fueling India’s rise on the world stage.
